A carbon steel griddle is perfect for cooking for many people. You can make everything from the most delicious brunch to perfect smashburgers. Moreover, the griddle is super versatile, as it can be used on induction, gas, grill and over open flame.
But how should a griddle be cleaned after use? We will tell you in this guide.
How to Clean a Griddle After Use
If you have other kitchen equipment in carbon steel, such as a cast iron skillet, you are likely already familiar with the methods. The cleaning of a griddle is namely identical to the methods used on cast iron skillets - and fortunately it is quite easy. Just read along here:
Method 1: Wipe with Paper Towel
If you have prepared something on your griddle that has not stuck, it is simple to clean the griddle. All you need to do is remove excess fats and food residue with a piece of paper towel. After that, the griddle is ready for storage
Method 2: Salt Method
If you have for example fried burgers or other meat, it can happen that something has stuck to the griddle. But fortunately this is also easy to remove and also without removing your seasoning, which makes the griddle nonstick - and therefore should preferably remain intact.
All you need to do is apply coarse salt to the griddle and a little oil. Then rub the mixture around on the griddle until the stubborn food residues are gone.
Method 3: Simmering Method
If method 2 has not been enough to remove the food residue, you can try the following procedure: Start by covering the surface of the griddle with a little water and let it simmer while you gently scrape the surface with a wooden spatula to remove the last food residues. Important, however, is that you ensure that the griddle becomes completely dry afterwards and apply a thin layer of oil to prevent rust formation. When these steps are completed, your griddle is ready for storage.
How to Deep Clean a Griddle
If you have lent your griddle to a friend who has not been quite punctual with our care guides, it can happen that burnt-on food residue or rust gets stuck in the griddle. Especially if the griddle has been exposed to water / moisture, you risk rust formation.
But fear not!
With this two-step method you can get your griddle to look like new:
NOTE: With both of these methods it is necessary to give your griddle a new seasoning afterwards, as these remove the existing seasoning.
Step 1: Scrub the Griddle
If there is food residue on the griddle, you can scrub the surface with a brush, coarse sponge or a ball of steel wool.
Step 2: Use Vinegar
If there is still food residue or rust in the griddle, we have one last trick:
1. Mix equal parts water and vinegar in the griddle and place it over medium heat on the stove or grill.
2. Pour out the mixture.
3. Scrub the griddle thoroughly with warm water and soap to remove any food or rust residue.
4. After cleaning it is important to give your griddle a new layer of seasoning by seasoning it with a thin layer of oil. This helps rebuild the protective coating and nonstick effect.
